Cape Cod Times – Letter to the Editor: “Keep Fighting to Protect Nantucket Sound”
December 29, 2017 –
More than 15 years ago a lot of us who live on and love the Cape and Islands got a serious shock: A private developer announced plans to build 130 massive steel turbines in the middle of the place we fish, swim, sail and love — Nantucket Sound.
The White House, Congress and Beacon Hill pushed the project. Boston media told residents to back off and let the project go forward. And those of us opposed to the project were routinely told the deck was stacked against us. But the Alliance to Protect Nantucket Sound pulled together folks from across the spectrum, and now we have learned the developer of the proposed wind farm has canceled the project. The great battle is won!
But guess what? We could wake up again sometime in the future and find ourselves exactly where we were 15 years ago — facing the private development of a public treasure. We dodged a bullet, but there’s no guarantee we’ll win if another industrial entity decides it can make money in these waters. It is time for permanent protection in whatever form that needs to take. The alliance and all of us can’t stop the fight until Nantucket Sound has ironclad guarantees it cannot be developed.
