URGENT - UPDATED ACTION ALERT! Thanks in part to your requests, the United States Coast Guard presented selected simulations of a Technology Service Corporation (TSC) marine radar analysis of Cape Wind yesterday. In contrast to earlier discussion-based stakeholder workshops, yesterday’s meeting was a highly-controlled, one-way presentation. Despite vehement requests from participants for a continued dialogue, the Coast Guard abruptly ended the meeting early and refused to address the life and death concerns of the marine community.
In an affront to the democratic process, the Coast Guard has refused to allow the public an opportunity to fully comment on the $100,000 taxpayer-funded radar study prior to the release of the Minerals Management Service (MMS) final report on Cape Wind, nor do they appear to be recommending safe separation distance to protect public safety. What can you do to keep the momentum going?
1. Send this NEW letter: Click here to send a letter to our elected officials urging the Coast Guard to provide an adequate public comment period for the radar study and recommend safe separation standards between navigation channels and Cape Wind. This letter will be sent to Senator Kennedy, Senator Kerry, Congressman Oberstar (D-MN), Congressman Delahunt, and nine other members of the Massachusetts delegation.
2. Make a phone call: In an effort to protect public safety and democratic transparency, Congressman James Oberstar has asked Admiral Thad Allen, Commandant of the U.S. Coast Guard, to “delay any recommendation to the Department of Interior, Minerals Management service until such time as: 1) the report is completed, 2) the report is publically available to all interested parties, and 3) that the public has a minimum of 60 days to review and comment on the study.”
Please call Congressman Oberstar’s offices now! Washington DC: (202) 226-3587 Duluth, MN: (218) 727-7474 Be sure to: -Thank the Congressman for his efforts to protect public safety in Nantucket Sound and preserve our rights to due process and comment -Encourage the Congressman to stand strong against political pressure to hastily approve the deeply-flawed Cape Wind project -Voice your opposition to Cape Wind and your support for responsibly-sited, cost-effective renewable energy
