I join nearly 100 stakeholder organizations and tens of thousands of individuals in urging you to introduce federal legislation to permanently preserve and protect Nantucket Sound. I support renewable energy, but the recent failures of offshore wind turbine blades are a powerful warning about where wind turbines should and should not be deployed. The potential impact of a similar event occurring in the middle of Nantucket Sound on the economy, sacred tribal sites, wildlife, tourism, and commercial fishing would be many times more damaging. Nantucket Sound should be the last place for development and is in critical need of protection.

Under the Massachusetts Ocean Sanctuaries Act, the Commonwealth has already protected the waters in Nantucket Sound within its jurisdiction, which extends three miles from the shores of Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard, and Nantucket. As our federal representative, I urge you to ensure that the remaining federal waters in the middle of the Sound are protected as well by enacting the “Nantucket Sound National Historic Landmark Act”.

This federal bill would recognize the Sound’s unique ecosystem and its rich cultural, tribal, and maritime history by designating it as a National Historic Landmark; protect traditional uses such as fishing and recreation; and ensure the federal waters in the center of the Sound have the same protections as our state waters. I fully support protection for Nantucket Sound and urge you to act today to designate the Sound as a National Historic Landmark.
